Castle Bornem dates from 1320 with the main sections of the castle being built in 1592. The Marnix family have been living here since 1773, the date that the Boston Tea Party was held. Proudly standing next to the river Schelde, just to the south of Antwerp, this influential Castle is a superb case study that we, and current owner, The Count John II de Marnix de Sainte Aldegonde are incredibly proud of.
When Volta’s Thierry Thenaers was designing ceilings for the majestic rooms within the castle, it was important that the designs would fit perfectly with the current architecture and period style, but to sympathetically add The Count John II’s own tasteful influence on the building.
Themes used on this project varied from hunting, the river Schalke, surrounding wildlife, Italian architecture, Michael Angelo, and even River Gods. These themes were built beautifully into contemporary designs using Trompe L’Oeil, creating modern classics that are being enjoyed by the owners and visiting guests alike.
